Disease-modifying medications for rheumatoid arthritis are aimed at changing the disease course, not just relieving symptoms. They work to slow or prevent joint damage and radiographic progression, which helps preserve function and reduce long-term disability. Biologics are a major subset of these drugs, but not the only ones—conventional non-biologic DMARDs (like methotrexate) also modify the disease. In contrast, symptomatic agents relieve pain and inflammation without altering disease progression, and placebo has no active effect. So the best description is disease-modifying agents, since this term covers the medications whose goal is to modify the underlying disease process.
